Tips
& Tricks for Cooking Smart
Cooking
smart is the first and foremost way to prevent sickness and unhealthy
side
effects from making meals and desserts for guests, friends or family
members. After all, who wants to eat food prepared by someone who
might
otherwise make them sick? Since it's easy to get sick from food
ill-prepared, every cook can follow some easy tips and tricks to
prevent this
from every being a reputation they carry around with them anywhere they
cook.
Before
you cook anything, you'll want to check out the ingredients you will be
cooking
with for a meal. Every thing from canned goods to meats should be
scrutinized for any possible sign of contamination; even the smallest
differentiation in color, something as simple as that, could be harmful
for
consumption. When it comes to canned goods, you'll want to ensure
that
the product hasn't expired and that when you open it, it still looks
fresh. Sometimes, even canned goods can go bad, contrary to
popular
belief.
Now,
when it comes to actually cooking food, you'll want to make sure you
wash your
hands thoroughly before coming in contact physically with any of the
ingredients you will be using. This also includes washing your
hands in
between handling specific foods, such as meat, so that raw bits don't
get
caught in with anything else where they could go bad and spoil the rest
of the
given ingredients. When in doubt, wash your hands, even if this
means
doing it every few minutes or so to prevent cross-contamination.
As
you're cooking, you'll want to put away ingredients that went unused or
unfinished. Leftover fruits and vegetables should be stored away
as soon
as possible after being cut, diced or otherwise used; this will prevent
them from
spoiling by being left out and exposed to room temperature.
However,
before you even begin to cut those fruits and veggies, make sure you
wash them
thoroughly under lukewarm water to get off any pesticides or other
byproducts
that have come into contact with their skin that could seep into what
you are
making on the stove or in the oven. Once you wash the fruits and
vegetables, you'll want to in most cases skin them as well with a knife
as most
cooks don't use skins in their meals. Make sure the skins get
thrown out
as soon as possible to avoid them getting lodged in with the cooking
ingredients.
Whenever
cooking anything, whether it is on the stove or in the oven, you'll
want to
make sure that you are cooking the entire meal or dessert at the
appropriate
temperature. You don't want to undercook food, especially meats,
because
this can be potentially damaging to digest. Meats generally have
acceptable, average, temperatures and times to be cooked and this
information
can be found on recipes. When in doubt, take a few moments to
look this
up on the Internet to be absolute sure that while cooking, you are
doing it
properly and safely.
The
best bet to a safe meal is to take simple steps to make sure the food
is in the
proper condition and safe for consumption. It just doesn't pay to
cook a
meal, get sick and lose out on ever wanting to taste the type of food
or
dessert ever again. So, when in doubt, be safe and you'll never
have to
worry about your food again.
